Potty training and big girl bed
As I am going to have a baby in 4 months, I keep thinking I really need to get Reagan potty trained and put her in a big girl bed. I am mourning the big girl bed part because I love love love her crib tent so much. We put her to bed and we know where she is. I don't have to worry about her getting up and wandering around the house in the middle of the night. I can put her down for naps and she actually takes one. I would highly recommend a crib tent for kids 18 months to 3 years. It has been a great investment and Reagan loves it too. I have no idea where to start with the potty training and I know I need to start but just dread it. I think I will try to check a book out from the library and maybe that will help. Does anyone know of any good ideas that have worked for them? Also, I've noticed that I've been a little apathetic about this baby #2. Not really excited about the crib beddding or clothes or anything. Not that I don't want this baby it's just different than it was with Reagan. Is this typical with baby #2...is it kind of been there done that or is it because it is a boy and it's just not as exciting to shop for boy stuff???

If you choose to wait till after the new baby is born on the potty training it could be a wise thing. Most kids I know revert when a new baby comes and its hard to retrain them. Then again the expense of only one kid in diapers is nice if you have accessible laundry to deal with accidents. Moves do a number on kids as well so we are going to start training Jack in June or July. We have had a potty seat since November but he really isn't interested. He sits on it between diaper changes though. I hear girls are easier to change than boys. Best of luck. (And since Jack moved to a big boy bed he has been a beast to actually get him to sleep in his room - he likes the new freedom. Every night Rich has to move him from the floor to his bed.)
As far as a big bed I was so scared of Jonas wondering the house as well. So I put a child proof door handle on the inside of his door so he can't get out. He actually loves when I put him to bed he plays for about 15 minutes and then crawls back in bed when he is ready then once he's asleep I go back in to tuck him in. Good luck!
scott is in florida, but he saw a couple with a cute little baby girl - all dressed up on sunday. he started to lament not being able to dress up a little girl anymore, so i think shopping for girls might be a bit more fun. but, i guess we will both find out.
so, does the crib tent fit any crib? i am trying to decide if i am going to buy another crib or a bed for elizabeth. i love knowing she is safe and not walking around as well - so i think i am going to buy another crib that converts into a toddler bed. any thoughts?
Oh, the joys of potty training. I would wait until she is ready, because changing a diaper is a lot easier than being frustrated as you clean out underwear yet again. At one point I had three in diapers and that was fine by me since the oldest one just wasn't ready. I let her take her time and she is a pro now! Each child is so different. Good luck!
I HATE the big girl bed thing. We have tried twice to put the side down on Ryley's crib and just make it a bed, but both times we end up putting it back . She can still crawl out of her crib, but the bed just gave her too much freedom she wasn't, or I wasn't, ready for.
Potty training is so difficult to decide on. It is true that kids revert when something big happens like a move or new baby. We actually used the "Toilet Training in Less Than a Day" method. You can find it in the library. It gives several ways to know if they are ready to start learning. The first day is a beast, the first week isn't great, but after about a month you should see that they have only the occasional accident. It worked great with Lizzy at 22 months. Katie was definitely not ready, so we waited until she was 2 1/2. She has done really good. It's not really the kids that get potty trained in my opinion. It's really the parents learning to make sure you take them regularly until they completely understand when they have to go. Each kid really is different. As for the bed...good luck with that. It really depends on what they do.
Also...don't feel bad about not being as excited. It is partly the "been there done that," as well as the clothes thing. Girls clothes really are cuter. But the boy clothes have definitely gotten better over the last few years. Your view will change the minute you have him. You'll do great with all of them. You can also make a big deal of the "big girl bed." Sometimes making it a super special event of not being a baby anymore can do the trick. Good luck.
First of all congratulations on the new baby! And Good Luck with potty training. I feel the same way about Hannah. We too are having a new baby in about 6 months and I would love to have Hannah potty trained before the baby comes but seeing as she will barely be two when that happens we'll have to wait. My mother-in-law suggested treats for Hannah when she actually goes on the toilet. And most importantly, let Reagan tell you when she's ready. It should be a lot easier. so i wish i had words of wisdom for you on the potty training, but joel is almost 3 1/2 and is still not potty trained. he's getting close to being ready, but i'm like you... i just don't even know where to start. is reagan really attached to her crib? if not, i would wait up until the last possible day to move her into a "big girl bed." once they discover that they can move around, it's pretty hard to get them to stay in bed. i would suggest having a separate play room if you can swing it, so she doesn't play with her toys when she should be sleeping (but that's not always an option if you don't have an extra room). also, like cynthia allen said, make a big deal out of her "big girl bed." when we picked out a toddler bed for joel, we printed out a picture of it and put it on the fridge and talked it up to joel for a couple weeks. when it finally came and we put it together, he was so excited. ok, that was really long... sorry. :)
